Rusalka – Photography Workshops & Performance

In November 2012 Wendy worked with La Folia and Life Wisdoms charity, to deliver a project responding to Dvořák’s fairy tale opera, Rusalka. The project was made possible through a Big Lottery Awards for All grant and was delivered to children at Broomhill Bank and Oakley Schools in Kent. Both schools are co-educational foundation special schools which provide education to students who have communication and interaction needs. The children created two new pieces of music theatre using their own stories, photographic self portraits and a graphics project.

Wendy guided the children through a series of weekly photography workshops in response to some of the themes in Rusalka that related to the elements of water, the magical realms of dreams and growing up.

The final photographs were exhibited at Broomhill Bank school and projected on the stage to music from Rusalka as a prelude to the theatrical re-staged opera, performed by the children from both schools.

The project was well-received and allowed the students to express emotions about growing up, learn new skills, and gain confidence through engaging in artistic activities.

The project was funded by Big Lottery, Awards for All grant
