Snow Q – Community Projects

As a part of our Arts Council supported Snow Q Project,  Luna Arts and poet Maria Jastrzębska delivered art and creative writing workshops to The Young Carers Group, Brighton.

We started by making storyboards with some traditional and contemporary illustrations from the H.C Andersen ‘Snow Queen’ story, making a link between the story protagonist called Gerda, who had to go on a quest to save her friend and to show strength and determination beyond her age and the heroic work that the Brighton Young Carers do.

Maria explored the creative use of language and took the children on a mythical journey creating their own quests. Sound recordings of the Young Carers’ wishes were later integrated into a soundscape by Simon Yapp to accompany an installation of their artwork.

We asked the Young Carers to imagine that they were to be put under the spell of the Enchantress in the ‘Snow Queen ‘ and to capture on a piece of paper or fabric everything that they did not want to forget. Young people used drawing, collage, transfer, sewing, and printing techniques to create images representing the happiest and most treasured moments in their lives that they wanted to hold forever. All work produced in the workshop became a part of our art installation at the Annex of the Regency Town House in Brighton. The Young Carers’ artwork formed a giant tablecloth for a kitchen table in the spectacular kitchen. Each art piece was attached with a silver thread to an installation above a giant textile, cornucopia-like chandelier that represented Gerda herself growing and becoming more assertive.

Many thanks to Tom Lambert, Brighton Young Carers’ Team Manager who welcomed us and arranged the workshops, to Ruth Sullivan and Paula Melis, Support and Outreach workers, and all members of support staff but most of all to the shiny stars of that rainy and cold day – the Young Carers.

The project was funded by a research and development grant from Arts Council England.
