‘Songs of Belonging’ is an R&D immersive multimedia project, featuring voices and stories from around the world, blurs boundaries between concert, film and theatre, as well as blending classical, folk, and experimental sounds.
‘Songs of Belonging’ is devised and produced by composer Emily Levy and explores themes of ‘home’ and ‘identity’. The R&D phase of this project began with a series of recorded conversations with a wide range of people, all with very different stories to tell. Interviewees may have relocated by choice, been displaced in circumstances beyond their control, always lived in one place, or be experiencing homelessness.
Emily developed the project in to a live performance piece during an R&D residency week at Snape Maltings in August 2021 in collaboration with dramaturg Mella Faye, a team of musicians and Wendy who created videos and immersive visual projections for the performance backdrop.
This R&D project was supported by Sound and Music, Snape Maltings, ‘New Voices’ and Arts Council England.
